Attic Insulation Services In Barrie

Each service covers one part of the attic, from the eaves to the hatch and the sloped ceilings below the roof.

Blown-In Attic Insulation

Blown-in attic insulation fills the whole attic floor with loose fibres that settle around trusses, wires and vent pipes. We blow it to a measured depth, usually R-60, and write that depth on the invoice.

Attic Insulation Top-Up

An attic insulation top-up blows fresh loose fill on top of whatever layer is already there. It is the quickest and least expensive way to bring an attic up to today's levels without tearing anything out.

Details and pricing

Ice Dam Prevention

Ice dam prevention means keeping the roof boards cold so snow does not melt from underneath. We do it from inside the attic by sealing air leaks, adding attic insulation and keeping the eave vents open.

Attic Insulation Removal

Attic insulation removal clears out worn or spoiled material, leaving bare joists ready for sealing and a fresh fill. We remove loose fill, old batts and mixed layers with a high-powered vacuum.

Attic Air Sealing

Attic air sealing plugs the cracks and holes in a ceiling that leak heated air upward. We seal those gaps with spray foam, caulking and gaskets before any new attic insulation is blown over them.

Details and pricing

Attic Ventilation

Attic ventilation lets outside air flow in low at the soffits and out high at the roof vents, so the attic stays cold and dry in winter. We check that flow and fix it as part of every insulation job.

Cathedral Ceiling Insulation

Cathedral ceiling insulation fills the space between the rafters in rooms where the ceiling follows the roof. That includes vaulted living rooms, bonus rooms over a garage and the upper floor of a story-and-a-half house.

Details and pricing

Attic Insulation Rebate

The Ontario attic insulation rebate sits inside Home Renovation Savings, which Enbridge Gas funds alongside Save on Energy. Under its attic stream, homeowners can get money back for raising an attic to R-50 or more without booking an energy audit.

Attic Insulation Cost

The attic insulation cost for most Barrie houses falls between $1,250 and $3,000. The figure for your house comes down to three things: the attic's square footage, the depth already up there and the number of air leaks to close.

Details and pricing

Why Choose Barrie Attic Insulation

You get attic insulation that is measured, not guessed. Before any price, we go up through the hatch with a tape, read the depth of what is there and work out today's R-value. The written quote then states the depth we will add, the material and the square footage, so two prices are easy to compare.

When the crew arrives, depth markers are set across the attic floor before the hose goes up the ladder. Attic insulation is blown in until every marker reads the same number, and you get that number on paper. See what install day looks like, or tell us about your attic and expect a phone call back.

What Are The Benefits Of Attic Insulation?

Upstairs bedrooms stop running colder than the main floor in January and hotter than it in July.

Less heat reaches the roof boards, so snow sits on the roof instead of melting into ice at the eaves.

Your furnace and air conditioner run for shorter stretches because the ceiling holds the heat where you want it.

Blown-in insulation fills around wires, trusses and odd framing that a roll of batts cannot reach.

With the ceiling sealed, moist air from showers and cooking stays downstairs instead of icing up the sheathing.

A deeper attic is quieter when rain, hail or a snowplow passes, and the house feels more even from room to room.

What You Can Count On With Every Attic

These commitments come with every attic job we book in Barrie.

  • The quote lists the material, the depth and the finished R-value for your attic.
  • Depth markers go in before we start, so you can see the insulation reach its target.
  • Drop sheets go down along the stairs and the hall below the hatch before the ladder goes up.
  • Gaps at light boxes, pipes and the top plates are sealed before new insulation goes over them.
  • You get photos of the finished attic and a written depth reading on the last page of the invoice.

Attic insulation details for Barrie homes

Most Barrie Attics Were Insulated To An Older Standard

Barrie more than doubled in size between 1991 and 2021, so a large share of the houses here are thirty years old or younger. Those attics were filled to the code of their day, and today's target for a new Ontario home is about R-60. Many of them sit well below that.

Blown-in insulation also settles over the years, and every trip into the attic for a cable or a bathroom fan packs a path flat. An attic insulation top-up brings the whole floor back to one even depth without pulling out what is already there.

Thin Attic Insulation Shows Up As A Cold Upstairs

If the bedrooms over the garage or at the back of the house are always the coldest rooms, the attic above them is the first place to look. Attic insulation is often thinnest over a garage ceiling, at the edge of the house and around the hatch.

We measure those spots on the free visit and mark them on the quote. When the problem is a whole attic, we price blown-in attic insulation for the full floor. When it is a few thin patches, we price only those.

Ice Dams Start With Heat Leaking Into The Attic

Barrie sits in a snowbelt, and lake-effect squalls off Georgian Bay can bury one side of the city while the other side stays clear. That deep snow is what makes an ice dam possible. Warm air from the house leaks into the attic, warms the roof boards and melts the snow from underneath. That meltwater slides to the eave, where the overhang is unheated, and turns into a ridge of ice.

Water then backs up behind the ice and finds its way under the shingles. Our ice dam prevention work goes after the cause: we seal the leaks, add insulation and keep the eave vents open.

Air Leaks Matter As Much As Attic Insulation Depth

Loose fill slows heat, but it does not stop moving air. Warm air pushes up through gaps around pot lights, plumbing stacks, the chimney and the top of every interior wall. That air carries moisture, and in a Barrie winter that moisture freezes onto the sheathing as frost.

Attic air sealing closes those gaps with foam and caulking before any new insulation goes on top. It is the step people cannot see afterward, and it makes the biggest difference to comfort and to ice at the eaves.

Blocked Soffit Vents Trap Moisture In The Attic

An attic needs outside air coming in low at the soffits and leaving high at the roof vents. Loose fill pushed all the way to the edge of the roof will choke those soffit vents, and the attic can no longer breathe. Frost builds up on the nails, the roof boards stay damp, and the insulation itself gets wet.

Rafter baffles are fitted along the soffits before any blowing starts. They hold a clear channel open for air while the insulation goes right out to the outside wall. Our attic ventilation page explains how we check the vents you already have.

Old Or Damaged Attic Insulation Sometimes Has To Come Out

Some attics cannot simply be topped up. Insulation that got soaked by an ice dam, smells like a mouse nest or has packed down to a few inches is better removed first. Adding a new layer over it hides the problem rather than fixing it.

Attic insulation removal uses a large vacuum truck parked in the driveway, with the hose run through the hatch, so the bags never travel through your living room. Once the attic is bare, we seal it, fix the vents and blow in new insulation to full depth.

Sloped Ceilings Need A Different Kind Of Insulation

Not every room has an attic above it. Bonus rooms, vaulted living rooms and the upper floor of a story-and-a-half house have the drywall fixed right to the rafters, with little or no space for loose fill. Those ceilings lose heat fast and are often where ice forms first on the roof.

Cathedral ceiling insulation is planned room by room. Depending on what we find, that might mean dense-packed insulation, spray foam applied to the roof sheathing, or new insulation added when the ceiling is open during a renovation.

Ontario Pays Part Of Many Attic Upgrades

Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy jointly fund the Home Renovation Savings program, and one of its streams covers attics alone with no audit. An attic upgraded to at least R-50 can qualify for up to $1,250 when it starts at R-12 or less. The rules, the amounts and the contractor list are on the program's own website.

Our attic insulation rebate page explains who qualifies and what the program asks for. We measure your starting R-value on the free visit, so you know which rebate level your attic would fall into.

What Attic Insulation Costs In Barrie

For a typical Barrie house, attic insulation runs $1,250 to $3,000. Blowing new fill over a layer that is still sound costs the least. Bare joists, a tear-out or heavy sealing work push the figure up. Spray foam on a sloped ceiling is priced above loose fill on a flat attic floor.

The attic insulation cost page breaks down what moves the price. The estimator on this page gives a quick range, and the free visit turns it into a written number.

What Might Your Attic Insulation Cost?

Pick a job type and enter your attic floor area to see what Ontario homeowners usually pay. After the free visit, a written number takes its place.

The ranges reflect Ontario going rates rather than a Barrie Attic Insulation price. A cramped attic, a messy old layer or a lot of sealing will move the number, and the smallest jobs begin around $1,000.

What Happens During An Attic Insulation Job?

  1. We start with a free attic check: we measure the old insulation, look at the vents and air leaks, take photos and send a written quote.

  2. On the morning of the job, drop sheets go down from the front door to the hatch, and depth rulers get stapled to trusses all over the attic.

  3. Air leaks are sealed and eave baffles are stapled in before any blowing starts.

  4. The blowing machine stays outside in the truck, and attic insulation is blown in until every marker shows the target depth.

  5. We clean up, photograph the finished attic and write the depth and R-value on your invoice before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Today's target for a new Ontario home is about R-60, or about 16 to 20 inches of loose fill once it settles. Most older attics we see in Barrie sit well below that. We measure yours on the free visit.

Yes, in most attics. Old fill that is dry, smells normal and stays clear of the soffits can simply be covered. If it is wet, mouldy or full of droppings, we recommend removal first.

A top-up on a typical Barrie house takes three to five hours. Removal plus new insulation usually takes one full day, and sometimes a second morning for a large attic.

Someone needs to let us in and show us the hatch. After that you can stay or go. The blowing machine runs outside, and the inside of the house stays covered and quiet.

No. The attic check, the photos and the written quote are all free, and there is no pressure to book.
