When Attic Insulation Removal Is Worth It
Attic insulation removal is the right choice when the old insulation is soaked by a leak or an ice dam, stained with mould, or full of mouse or squirrel droppings. It also makes sense when the layer has packed down to a few inches and is mixed with debris from old roofing jobs.
In those cases, a new layer on top would trap the problem underneath. Attic insulation removal leaves the sheathing and wall tops in plain view, so repairs are easy to make.
Seal The Attic Right After Attic Insulation Removal
After attic insulation removal, every air leak in the ceiling is easy to see. We seal around pot lights, wires, plumbing stacks and the chimney, and along the top of every wall. That sealing is much faster and more complete in an empty attic than it is in one full of insulation.
From there, new blown-in attic insulation goes in to full depth, and baffles go in at the eaves.
Vermiculite Is Tested Before Anyone Touches It
Some older homes have vermiculite in the attic: pebbly, grey-brown or gold granules. Vermiculite can contain asbestos, so it must be tested by a lab before any removal work starts. If it tests positive, removal is done by an asbestos abatement contractor. We insulate the attic once that work is finished and cleared.
Attic Insulation Removal Pricing
Attic insulation removal plus new insulation is generally $3.00 to $5.50 for each square foot of attic, with the depth of the old material and the size of the hatch setting where your job lands. The written quote shows the removal and the new insulation as separate lines. See attic insulation cost for more.
