Attic Insulation Top-Up
An attic insulation top-up blows fresh loose fill on top of whatever layer is already there. It is the quickest and least expensive way to bring an attic up to today's levels without tearing anything out.
Details and pricingBlown-in attic insulation fills the whole attic floor with loose fibres that settle around trusses, wires and vent pipes. We blow it to a measured depth, usually R-60, and write that depth on the invoice.
Barrie Attic Insulation uses either blown-in cellulose or blown-in fibreglass, and the quote tells you which one and why. Both are blown from a machine that stays in the truck, through a hose that runs up to the attic hatch.
Rolls of batts are cut to fit between the joists, and every cut leaves a seam. Around trusses, wiring and the hatch frame, those seams turn into open gaps where heat escapes. Blown-in attic insulation flows into those gaps and leaves one continuous layer across the floor.
That matters most over the bedrooms at the edge of the house, where the rafters drop close to the ceiling and batts are hardest to fit.
Cellulose starts as recycled newsprint and is treated with borate against fire and mould. It is dense, so it slows air movement inside the layer and settles a little in the first year. Fibreglass is lighter, does not absorb water and settles less. Both reach R-60 when blown deep enough.
We recommend one on the visit based on your attic. A low attic with little headroom often suits cellulose. An attic with a history of roof leaks often suits fibreglass.
Before the hose comes up, we staple depth rulers to trusses across the attic floor, including the far corners and the edges near the eaves. Blown-in attic insulation goes in until every ruler shows the same number. You get a photo of the rulers and the reading on your invoice.
Many Barrie attics are a mix of old batts in one spot and thin loose fill in another. The rulers make sure blown-in attic insulation fills the low spots, not just the area near the hatch.
Taking an empty attic all the way to R-60 typically lands at $1.75 to $3.00 for each square foot of floor. Blown-in attic insulation over an existing layer costs less, because less material goes in. Your emailed quote sets the actual figure. Read what moves the attic insulation cost for more detail.

Ice dam prevention means keeping the roof boards cold so snow does not melt from underneath. We do it from inside the attic by sealing air leaks, adding attic insulation and keeping the eave vents open.

Attic insulation removal clears out worn or spoiled material, leaving bare joists ready for sealing and a fresh fill. We remove loose fill, old batts and mixed layers with a high-powered vacuum.

Attic air sealing plugs the cracks and holes in a ceiling that leak heated air upward. We seal those gaps with spray foam, caulking and gaskets before any new attic insulation is blown over them.
Details and pricing
Attic ventilation lets outside air flow in low at the soffits and out high at the roof vents, so the attic stays cold and dry in winter. We check that flow and fix it as part of every insulation job.

Cathedral ceiling insulation fills the space between the rafters in rooms where the ceiling follows the roof. That includes vaulted living rooms, bonus rooms over a garage and the upper floor of a story-and-a-half house.

The Ontario attic insulation rebate sits inside Home Renovation Savings, which Enbridge Gas funds alongside Save on Energy. Under its attic stream, homeowners can get money back for raising an attic to R-50 or more without booking an energy audit.

The attic insulation cost for most Barrie houses falls between $1,250 and $3,000. The figure for your house comes down to three things: the attic's square footage, the depth already up there and the number of air leaks to close.
