Frequently Asked Questions

Most Barrie houses fall between $1,250 and $3,000. A top-up runs about $1.25 to $2.25 a square foot of attic floor, while removal plus new insulation runs higher. Your written quote after a free attic check is the real number.

Today's target for a new Ontario home is about R-60. Older attics in Barrie often sit between R-20 and R-40 once settling is counted. We measure yours on the free visit and tell you how far it is from the target.

It depends on the material. Plan on about 16 to 20 inches of settled cellulose or fibreglass for R-60. We blow to the depth the product needs and mark it with rulers.

For an attic floor, blown-in attic insulation usually performs better because it fills around trusses, wires and vent pipes without seams. Batts work well in open walls and in some sloped ceilings.

There is no set schedule. Most attics need attention when the insulation has settled, been disturbed by other trades, or falls below today's levels. When the joist tops are poking out of the insulation, the attic is due.

The ceiling drywall and its air sealing do that job in most Barrie houses. What matters most is sealing the gaps at lights, pipes and wall tops so damp air cannot reach the attic. New loose fill goes right over the sealed ceiling.

Insulation helps, but air sealing and clear eave vents matter just as much. An ice dam begins with house heat warming the roof deck. We seal the leaks, add insulation and fit baffles so the roof stays cold.

Modern cellulose and fibreglass do not. Some older homes have vermiculite, which can contain asbestos and must be lab tested before anyone disturbs it. If yours tests positive, removal is done by an abatement contractor first.

Possibly. Up to $1,250 is available through Home Renovation Savings for an attic raised to R-50 or more, as long as its rules are met and a contractor from the program's list handles the job. Check the current rules on homerenovationsavings.ca.

Our goal is a same-day callback, with the attic check booked a few days later. Most jobs can be scheduled within one to two weeks of the quote, depending on the season. Fall and early winter fill up first.

Blown-In Attic Insulation

Blown-in attic insulation fills the whole attic floor with loose fibres that settle around trusses, wires and vent pipes. We blow it to a measured depth, usually R-60, and write that depth on the invoice.

Attic Insulation Top-Up

An attic insulation top-up blows fresh loose fill on top of whatever layer is already there. It is the quickest and least expensive way to bring an attic up to today's levels without tearing anything out.

Ice Dam Prevention

Ice dam prevention means keeping the roof boards cold so snow does not melt from underneath. We do it from inside the attic by sealing air leaks, adding attic insulation and keeping the eave vents open.

Attic Insulation Removal

Attic insulation removal clears out worn or spoiled material, leaving bare joists ready for sealing and a fresh fill. We remove loose fill, old batts and mixed layers with a high-powered vacuum.

Attic Air Sealing

Attic air sealing plugs the cracks and holes in a ceiling that leak heated air upward. We seal those gaps with spray foam, caulking and gaskets before any new attic insulation is blown over them.

Attic Ventilation

Attic ventilation lets outside air flow in low at the soffits and out high at the roof vents, so the attic stays cold and dry in winter. We check that flow and fix it as part of every insulation job.

Cathedral Ceiling Insulation

Cathedral ceiling insulation fills the space between the rafters in rooms where the ceiling follows the roof. That includes vaulted living rooms, bonus rooms over a garage and the upper floor of a story-and-a-half house.

Attic Insulation Rebate

The Ontario attic insulation rebate sits inside Home Renovation Savings, which Enbridge Gas funds alongside Save on Energy. Under its attic stream, homeowners can get money back for raising an attic to R-50 or more without booking an energy audit.

Attic Insulation Cost

The attic insulation cost for most Barrie houses falls between $1,250 and $3,000. The figure for your house comes down to three things: the attic's square footage, the depth already up there and the number of air leaks to close.
